Research experience
I have been working on research projects during my PhD study in the intersection of inflammation and metabolism. My research skills and expertise have directly contributed to high-impact publication (please see below). Furthermore, I have been invited to present my research work at prestigious conferences such as Joint Biochemical Society/British Society for Immunology, Birmingham, UK.
I develop some aspects of the research projects from initial planning through to writing up for presentation or publication. Thus, I have an experience of hypothesis-driven research, devising the appropriate research methodology to test the hypotheses, carrying out the experimental techniques and writing up for reports and publications in peer-reviewed journals. My research skills and expertise are wide-ranging and it includes Immunology, cell biology and Biochemistry. Examples of my current and previous research projects include:
- The role of NAD+ homeostasis in modulation macrophage immune response, in particular, TNF-α response. This research provided a comparative study between pro-anti/inflammatory macrophages indicating key role for NAD+ and thus NAD+ homeostasis in macrophage immune function and this might further strengthen the link between metabolism and pro-inflammatory immune response in macrophages. This is a growing research field that might help to develop and provide a considerable impact and scope for future significant grant applications.
Research impact: This study has shown that NAD+ might play pivotal role in pro-inflammatory response in macrophages and also these data further suggest that the agonist-induced rise in NAD+ shows striking parallels to well-known second messengers and raises the possibility that NAD+ is acting in a similar manner in this model. A recent publication has arisen from this project including:
- Alshabany, J., Moody, A. J., Foey, A. D. & Billington, R. A. 2016. Intracellular NAD+ levels are associated with LPS-induced TNF-α release in pro-inflammatory macrophage Biosci. Rep.13; 36 (1). pii: e00301. doi: 10.1042/BSR20150247
- While I am studying my M.Sc. and later on while I have been teaching at Al-Qadisiyah University, I have been involved in key projects that aimed at determining serum antioxidant defences by measuring serum levels of some macro antioxidant compounds and minerals as well as some antioxidant enzyme activities. I conducted analytical and clinical studies to groups of diabetic and healthy people from the population of Al-Qadisiyah city in Iraq.
Research impact: This study has shown that anti-oxidants molecules display clear decrease in diabetic patients while conversely oxidative parameters represented by increased Malondialdehyde levels. Using atomic absorption technique, essential and trace minerals have been measured in the blood of diabetic patients involved in the studies. In addition, I have been involved in taking seminars and supervision of undergraduate project students. A number of publications have arisen from these (available on request) and presented in local scientific conferences in Iraq.
